30 June 2010 - Waste Handling Seminar in the Swedish Pavilion

The Waste Handling Seminar on June 30 was the first in a series of events patronised by the Swedish Government offices to promote Swedish environmental technology companies in China. The Waste Handling Seminar was followed by an extensive SymbioCity programme in the Swedish Pavilion on 1-2 July, focusing on sustainable urban development.

Urban waste handling is gaining importance out of many perspectives. For any city its cleanliness is not only a factor of sanitation and environment, but also of economical growth. The rapid increase of waste volumes poses serious challenges to the planning and management of our cities. It affects the accessibility, the environment and the well-being of its citizens.

Sweden is widely known for its high level environmental practices and innovative technical solutions. At the Waste Handling Seminar experts from China and Sweden will discuss the urban waste handling challenges and best practice solutions. New technologies within waste recycling, underground waste transportation systems, waste-to-energy-plants, biogas production etc. are presented.

The official sponsors of the event were the Swedish Association of Waste Management (Avfall Sverige) and the Chinese Association of Urban Environmental Sanitation (CAUES).

It was only open to specially invited high-level decision makers from selected Chinese cities and to Swedish waste handling experts and companies.
