Littering caused by overfull bins are a constant source of irritation in crowded areas; in city parks where people consume lots of food and drinks, at major sporting events where litter bins are filled rapidly over a short time or along pedestrian streets and shopping areas in cities.
Frequently emptying litter bins costs a lot of money. Moreover, it is often difficult for waste collection operatives to get to where they need to be, and the pickups disturb.
This is how it works
Users discard their waste as usual in litterbins. The bins are connected to and emptied by an automated waste collection system. The bins contain a “level sensor” that senses when the bins are full. A valve opens beneath the bin and the litter is suctioned into an underground pipe net and on to a collection station with a container.
Two different types of automated vacuum system can be used for emptying:
1) Stationary system
With a stationary vacuum system, the litter is suctioned via a pipe net into a container in a collection station positioned in a suitable location on the periphery of the area or underground. A valve is used to regulate the emptying of all litter bins connected to the pipe net. The bins are emptied either automatically when they are full or at regular intervals.
2) Mobile hybrid
With the mobile hybrid system, the litter is suctioned via a pipe net into closed screw tanks that are usually located underground. The screw tanks are linked to docking points from which a mobile vacuum truck empties them as required. The docking points are positioned in such a way that the vacuum truck does not have to drive into parks, narrow or pedestrian streets.
