Hac Sa Wan is a consolidated area in downtown Macau with high‐rise apartment blocks, shops and other commercial permises. The area houses 60,000 people and accounts for 10% of the daily waste production in Macau.
In 2005 the Macau Government decided to be make Hac Sa Wan the spot for a pilot project to evaluate the effects of the installation and operation of a vacuum waste collection system. The waste challenge in Macau is huge and the government working actively to find solutions. The system has been operation since February 2009. It is operated by CSR, the company contracted to take care of all residential waste collection and treatment in Macau.
The result of the pilot project is an improved environment both for the cleaning staff and the residents in the area, the waste is not kept in the street for the whole days anymore (important in this climate!) and valuable space has been released.
