Almere is the fastest growing city in the Netherlands. It is built on reclaimed land that was once below sea level. The city already has a population of 180,000 which will increase to 360,000 by 2030. The area has a mixture of household, commercial, public and hospital facilities.
There are 196 inlets at 57 inlet points both outdoors and indoors. In addition to this there are 105 litter bins. Users need a card to use the inlets while the litterbins are accessible to everyone.
Almere is the first city in the Netherlands to choose a vacuum system nd the first city ever to connect litter bins to the system. It has a reputation for adopting innovative solutions, while showing commitment to the development of an added value environment for the future.
The city centre was constructed in 1976 and has been under reconstruction since 2000.
All logistics and traffic in the city centre are underground, below street level.
