Ciutat Vella, in the center of Barcelona, has very narrow and crowded streets and alleys and a tremendous commercial activity. The Santa Caterina installation collect the refuse of the food market itself and from the flats, shops and bars of the whole area.
In operation since 2005, the double underground collection station of the Santa Caterina Market, is integrated in the equipment sector of the market. It was designed to collect two fractions, organic and residual.
Today it is collecting the refuse of 4,500 dwellings, 15 tons/day, once all phases start up it will attend 18.000 dwellings in the area of Ciutat Vella with about 130 out door inlets situated in the streets. There are also inlets exclusively used by shops and bars, equipped with big size doors for larger quantities of waste.
The famous ceramic roof and the project of restoration of the food market have been recognised with several awards.
