Odense Municipality has a major objective for the future of waste handling when it comes to improving consumer service including high goals on municipal environment and not to say the least, the labour environment for the waste collectors.
In connection with the conversion of the Port of Odense and the creation of the new pedestrian city district "Promenadebyen", the municipality has put great emphasis on attractive public spaces. The litterbin vacuum waste collection system at the Port of Odense is a pilot project, where the municipal waste collection company both collects the waste and own the system. The project is a full scale test to gain economic, technical, environmental, labour and environmental experiences from the litter bin system.
For the first time in Denmark, several waste fractions are collected to one point - municipal waste from housing (collected from the rubbish chute in the building blocks, waste from the rubbish bins in public areas and easily accessible inlets for commercial users to throw different packaging materials, such as plastic bottles, paper etc.
The system is designed to eventually be expanded and connected to a Stationary Vacuum System that will be able to cover a larger area than the present. Initially, the vacuum system includes municipal waste from the first three building blocks and eight litterbins on the promenade next to the harbour canal.
The litterbins and inlets for the residential blocks are designed by Architect Erik Brandt Dam.
