This is David Gundersen

David Gundersen is one of Envac Norway’s service technicians based in the Oslo office. On a daily basis, David works on performing services, unclogging blockages, and looking for improvements in existing systems. He works towards perfection and leaves the facility as he would like to encounter it himself.

David was born and raised on a farm, where he spent a lot of time tinkering around and gained solid knowledge from his dad. With extensive experience and a broad field of expertise in farming, he found the greatest interest in mechanical work, with tractors being particularly exciting. Therefore, it was a natural choice for him to pursue education to become a tractor and agricultural mechanic. After completing his education, David continued as an apprentice for almost two years. The apprentice period was marked by many thoughts and reflections about his own work life. The work routine where he was became a bit too static for him, as varied tasks, challenges, and some traveling turned out to be factors that David appreciated. Additionally, David had a little one on the way, so a change felt natural.

In my new job as a concrete cutter, I met a future colleague from Envac. When this colleague moved over to Envac, it didn’t take long before he tipped me off about a vacant position, and I followed suit, becoming part of the Envac team in November 2018.

At Envac, David has learned a lot of new things. Initially, he learned about waste collection systems in general, and then he gained a lot through troubleshooting on the systems, learning how to solve challenges and gaining even more technical understanding. Components such as mechanics and hydraulics from his previous jobs are relatable to waste collection systems. David has also developed an interest in numbers and accounting, and the comprehensive understanding of operations. The content presented at internal meetings about the company’s status, ongoing projects, and potential markets creates motivation and interest for David.

The most enjoyable tasks for David are when his brain has to work a little extra. It could be replacing a complex part or tackling a challenging blockage. It’s also exciting to see what causes the blockages, where one almost stops being surprised. A Christmas tree, a vacuum cleaner, and a toaster are examples of items that have caused challenges and blockages in the systems. It gives an extra sense of satisfaction to solve the challenge and help the customer. Through servicing the systems, David can uncover parts that need to be replaced and present it as a suggestion to the customer. It’s even more fun when the customer accepts the improvement.

The biggest and most enjoyable challenge David has been involved in was replacing a PDV valve in a large system. A PDV valve is found in stationary systems and selects which container the waste should be sent to. The job was extensive and complicated, leading to a lot of learning, good teamwork, and a successful outcome.

The great thing about working at Envac is that I have a lot of control over my day and can prioritize what I believe is most important for the day, especially when alarms go off and I’m not entirely sure what I’ll encounter.

Friendly colleagues

In his daily work life, David enjoys being able to plan the next day and check the weather. If the weather is nice, he particularly enjoys servicing outdoor systems, and vice versa. He appreciates his friendly colleagues and the help he receives when needed. Envac is perceived as a workplace with few problems, and it’s a nice place to work.

A major highlight for David was the trip Envac had to Barcelona. He was brand new to the company and found it a bit intimidating to meet all his new colleagues. During the trip, Envac visited the waste collection systems of our Spanish colleagues, watched a football match, enjoyed good food, and had pleasant gatherings. The trip was a great success, and David felt warmly welcomed.

I enjoy the social events we have at Envac, and I look forward to the summer party and the Christmas feast. These events allow colleagues to meet each other in different settings, engage in social activities, and have a good time. It fosters a sense of belonging and helps build the team together!

In his personal life, David is mostly occupied with his four children and taking care of them, with football practices and matches taking up a significant portion of his time. The Gundersen family also enjoys frequent forest walks together. If there’s any room for some alone time, David enjoys deer hunting with a group of friends. A small dream of his is to hunt elk, as it’s a large and exciting animal. David is particularly concerned about animal welfare and views hunting as a good way to regulate the deer population while utilizing the entire animal.

Furthermore, David enjoys the social events we have at Envac and looks forward to the summer party and the Christmas dinner. These events allow colleagues to meet in different settings, engage in social activities, and have a good time. It fosters a sense of belonging and helps build the team together.
