Envac’s automated waste collection in Bergen featured by the World Economic Forum

This global spotlight from the World Economic Forum underlines how smart infrastructure can directly contribute to environmental progress and a better quality of life.

We are delighted to share that the World Economic Forum (WEF) has spotlighted the City of Bergen’s innovative implementation of Envac’s automated waste collection system as a leading example of sustainable urban innovation.

In its global social post, the World Economic Forum praised Bergen’s commitment to embracing future-focused infrastructure that serves current and future generations. The post highlights how the city’s use of Envac’s underground waste collection technology is helping to build a cleaner, healthier, and more efficient urban environment.

This recognition is not only a tribute to Bergen’s forward-thinking leadership but also a reflection of how Envac’s technology is shaping the cities of tomorrow, from cutting emissions and reducing air pollution to eliminating the health risks associated with traditional waste collection.

Being recognised by the World Economic Forum is a proud moment for our team. It reinforces our mission to enable cities around the world to become more resilient, hygienic, and environmentally responsible, said Joakim Karlsson, Chief Executive Officer at Envac.

About the project:
BIR Infrastruktur AS, one of Norway’s largest waste management companies, manages the waste. BIR launched the project in 2008, with Envac as the primary contractor. Envac strives to continue developing and improving the system to meet the waste management needs of Bergen’s current and future generations, creating a sustainable and smart city in every aspect of waste management. Envac’s system in Bergen has:

  • Significantly reduced heavy vehicle traffic in urban areas
  • Improved sanitary conditions and air quality
  • Enabled long-term sustainability through smarter waste management

Earlier this year, Bergen’s innovative waste system was also featured by The Washington Post, further highlighting the international interest in sustainable, tech-driven city solutions.
