Paper, plastic packaging, residual waste, food waste, and litter from public bins
Stockholm Royal Seaport (SRS) is one of Europe’s largest urban development projects, transforming former industrial areas into vibrant, sustainable residential and business districts.
By 2030, SRS will include at least 12,000 new homes and 35,000 workplaces, all seamlessly connected to Envac’s advanced waste collection system—one of several innovative environmental technologies shaping the area’s green profile.
Envac was chosen for its expertise in sustainable waste management, developed through projects such as Hammarby Sjöstad. The system features user-friendly, self-emptying inlets throughout the district, ensuring that waste is collected easily and efficiently and transported to a robust underground terminal. This terminal, built in a rock chamber for maximum durability, is equipped with a heat exchanger that recycles energy from the system back into the facility.
A weighing system maximises the fill level of containers before they are emptied, reducing unnecessary collections. As a result, waste collection vehicle traffic has been reduced by 90%, eliminating the need for manual waste handling and contributing to a safer, cleaner, and more resource-efficient urban environment.

after introducing ReFlow
Envac ReFlow is an innovative digital solution that complements Envac’s pneumatic waste collection system and helps cities achieve their climate and recycling goals. With the industry’s first smart meter, the system collects data via RFID-tagged inlets, providing users with feedback on recycling and helping to optimise operations.
The platform visualises waste flows, offers real-time feedback, and guides users to alternative inlets. Faults can be easily reported via the app or QR code, and many issues are resolved automatically. User-friendly guides and tips provide tailored information, making recycling easier and more efficient.
The “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” project in Norra Djurgårdsstaden has led to reduced waste and increased recycling with the help of Envac ReFlow. The results show that ReFlow drives behavioural change, improves recycling quality, and reduces emissions – and the project continues to develop.
Collaboration and innovative thinking open the door to creative solutions and encourage engagement. In this way, Norra Djurgårdsstaden is driving the development of the next generation of sustainable urban districts. Within the Norra Djurgårdsstaden urban development project, under Agenda 2030, five sustainability goals are being pursued, together contributing to all of the UN’s global goals for sustainable development.
Stockholm and Norra Djurgårdsstaden won the award for Best Sustainable Urban Development Project in the “Sustainable Communities” category, presented at the UN Climate Conference in Paris 2015 by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group—a network connecting more than 80 of the world’s megacities.
The various innovations and projects within Norra Djurgårdsstaden have also been recognised with the ROT Prize and the Landscape Architecture Prize.
Resource-efficient holistic solutions contribute to reduced climate impact, increased climate adaptation, and prepare Norra Djurgårdsstaden for future challenges.
