From planners to operators, industry leaders see Envac’s technology as making a positive impact on waste management in Australian cities.
Delivered in partnership with Envac, the advanced waste collection system provides an alternative to traditional waste trucks, helping to create quieter streets, cleaner public spaces and safer environments for residents and businesses. Designed to support Maroochydore’s long-term sustainability vision, it reflects a distinctly Australian approach — forward-thinking, practical and focused on community wellbeing.
A smarter and more sustainable future
Public litter bins for general waste and recyclables are cleared daily without the use of waste collection trucks. The sealed network prevents odours and vermin and is resilient to many challenges, while eliminating the need for visible wheelie bins in public areas. In commercial buildings, waste is deposited into conveniently located inlets, and the system automatically transfers waste up to four times a day, depending on demand.
By moving waste through a network of underground pipes rather than across busy streets, the system reduces the number of heavy collection vehicles on local roads. The result is less traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions and improved public safety — outcomes that align closely with the Sunshine Coast’s environmental and liveability goals.
The first phase of the system, which involved the construction of the collection station, was completed in 2019, and full operations began in 2021. As the city continues to grow, new buildings are being connected to the system, with the entire development scheduled for completion in 2041.
Stakeholder Perspectives
In a recent interview, Amanda Yeates, Former CEO of SunCentral Maroochydore, explained why Envac’s solution was chosen for the city’s new heart:
“We needed more than a waste solution — we needed infrastructure that could align with our sustainable, people-centric vision. Envac delivered a system that works invisibly but powerfully, allowing the city to grow gracefully and with dignity.”
At the operational level, Envac Team Australia plays an essential role in ensuring the system performs to the highest standards. Ian Pritchard, Operations Manager at Envac Australia, has been involved since the installation phase and now oversees day-to-day operations, maintenance and community engagement.
“I really appreciate the forefathers of this city who thought ahead and said, ‘Let’s do this and commit to this, because now the community will benefit from this for years to come,’” said Ian Pritchard.
Envac’s Australian team also runs educational tours for schools and community groups, helping residents understand how innovative waste management contributes to cleaner, safer and more sustainable cities.
Collaboration and Local Impact
The Maroochydore system illustrates how Australian ingenuity and global expertise can come together to deliver meaningful infrastructure outcomes. By reducing waste collection traffic and improving efficiency, the system supports the Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to sustainability and future-ready design.
Envac Team Australia continues to work closely with SunCentral Maroochydore and local partners to maintain system performance and explore opportunities for further innovation. As Australia develops cities and infrastructure to support events like the upcoming Olympics 2032, this ongoing collaboration highlights the importance of adapting technology thoughtfully to local needs. Such efforts can significantly enhance the liveability and resilience of Australian cities, ensuring they are prepared for future challenges and opportunities.

By highlighting the perspectives of Australian stakeholders and local operators, Envac aims to foster partnerships, deepen community trust and demonstrate the real-world value of automated waste collection systems in shaping the next generation of sustainable Australian cities.
