The Wilds, Barking Riverside, housing Envac’s automated waste system, wins the British Community Building of the year award
The Wilds at Barking Riverside, a new multi-purpose community space, won the 2022 RICS National Award in the United Kingdom for its outstanding achievement in providing a facility that directly benefits the local community.
The Wilds at Barking Riverside is using the Envac vacuum waste collection system and the waste collection terminal is housed in the same building. The system at Barking Riverside will be one of the largest Envac systems in Europe on completion. The Wild Ecological Centre is a place where the public can learn about the local environment and wildlife.
At The Wilds, the community comes together to experience free programmes, exhibitions, and resources that promote making sustainable choices. The Wilds-Envac project illustrates sustainable urban development that helps the local community with resource-efficient waste handling.
“The Wilds is an outstanding community centre plus an innovative household refuse collection depot which collects refuse from the surrounding area by way of an underground system of pipes, thus eliminating the need for collection vehicles within the locality. The combination of these two activities under one roof gave this project the edge.” – Hugh Kemsley OBE MA FRICS, National Community Benefit Judge.
‘Our vision is to create smarter cities, improve quality-of-life today, and help secure a greener planet for future generations. With The Wilds building, we have the perfect building to operate and reference our system at Barking Riverside. The system’s performance and happy end users are the true testament to Envac’s teamwork and dedication.’ – Dave Buckley, Managing Director, Envac UK Limited
